Vietnamese and Danish investors partner to expand air logistics

Two investors from Vietnam and Denmark are researching opportunities to expand air cargo terminal operations at Vietnam's Gia Binh and Long Thanh airports, amid high expectations for logistics infrastructure to strengthen international trade connectivity.

On October 20 in Copenhagen, Denmark, VinaCapital and A.P. Moller Capital, a global infrastructure fund manager under Denmark’s A.P. Moller Group, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to explore joint investment opportunities in transportation and logistics infrastructure in Vietnam.

The agreement was signed during the state visit of General Secretary and President To Lam and a high-level Vietnamese delegation to Denmark from October 19-21.

The two sides aim to strengthen cooperation, support the development of Vietnam’s logistics sector, and contribute to consolidating economic and investment ties between Vietnam and Denmark.

The MOU builds on previous collaboration between the two parties, including an investment in ALS Cargo Terminal Joint Stock Company (ALSC) in 2025. This activity enables A.P. Moller Capital to apply its transportation expertise to Vietnam's air logistics sector.

Under the agreement, the two companies will explore investment opportunities in transportation infrastructure, logistics, and air logistics. A potential direction for cooperation is expanding ALSC’s air cargo terminal operations to Gia Binh International Airport, currently under construction near Hanoi, and Long Thanh International Airport in southern Dong Nai city, which borders Ho Chi Minh City.

These two airports aim to become regional cargo transshipment hubs. According to the agreement, A.P. Moller Capital’s industry experience, global network, and regional team of professional advisors can support the process of realizing this goal.

In addition to seeking investment opportunities, both sides will continue to exchange expertise and experience in operations, technology, governance, and sustainable development.

The cooperation agreement between VinaCapital and A.P. Moller Capital was signed as Vietnam-Denmark economic relations continue to develop after 55 years of establishing diplomatic ties, and especially after the two countries have upgraded their relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership during the top Vietnamese leader's State visit to Denmark; thus  shifting from development assistance to equal, mutually beneficial cooperation.

According to statistics from the Foreign Investment Agency under the Ministry of Finance, as of September 30, Denmark had 180 valid projects in Vietnam with total registered capital of approximately $2.475 billion. Denmark ranks 21st among 153 countries and territories with active investment projects in Vietnam, 7th among European investors, and 5th among EU member states investing in Vietnam.

In the first nine months of 2026 alone, Denmark’s total registered investment capital in Vietnam reached about $401.82 million, including $388.39 million in newly registered capital, $8.28 million in adjusted capital, and $5.15 million in capital contributions and share purchases.

As a result, Denmark ranked 11th among investment partners in Vietnam in the first nine months of 2026 and 3rd in the EU, after Luxembourg and the Netherlands. Compared to approximately $84.05 million in the same period of 2025, total registered capital increased by about 378 percent, equivalent to nearly 4.8 times in scale.

Mr. Le Viet Hai, Deputy Managing Director of VinaCapital’s Logistics Investment Fund, stated that logistics plays an important role in maintaining and enhancing Vietnam's position as a global manufacturing hub, while contributing to the target of 10 percent GDP growth in coming years.

According to Mr. Hai, strengthening cooperation with A.P. Moller Capital will help VinaCapital leverage its partner's expertise in logistics to contribute to Vietnam's development. Both sides also aim to coordinate with other partners and relevant ministries and sectors to support economic development goals.

Meanwhile, Mr. Jens Thomassen, a Partner at A.P. Moller Capital, said the enterprise recognizes the potential from growing trade between Vietnam and international markets. Experience in global transport and logistics, combined with local partner networks, is expected to help both sides find additional cooperation opportunities in the region.

In 2025, two-way trade turnover between the two countries reached $720.69 million, up 6.6 percent compared to the previous year. The EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) also creates favorable conditions for goods from both sides to access markets.

Investments by Danish enterprises in Vietnam focus on manufacturing and infrastructure, with notable projects including LEGO Group's toy factory with total investment of over $1 billion; the Lien Chieu container port overall construction investment project involving APM Terminals, a subsidiary of A.P. Moller-Maersk, with total investment of $1.7 billion; the Cai Mep International Terminal project involving APM Terminals, with investment of $268.6 million; and Pandora's high-end jewelry manufacturing plant with total investment of over $150 million.
