Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV) has announced plans to have the Long Thanh International Airport under construction in southern Dong Nai city commercially operated from 0:00 on December 24, 2026.
ACV also requested local authorities to direct relevant agencies and units to coordinate and support the preparation for and organization of the airport operations within their functions and authority.
In the initial phase of operations, domestic airlines will gradually begin their activities at the new airport. Vietnam Airlines plans to operate the Long Thanh - Hanoi route along with several international routes; Vietjet Air intends to launch domestic routes connecting Long Thanh with major economic and tourist centers across the country.
The allocation of flights is being developed in collaboration with regulatory agencies, airport operators, and airlines based on slot coordination parameters, operational plans between Tan Son Nhat and Long Thanh airports, as well as international aviation agreements and actual operating conditions.
According to ACV's report, the construction works under Component Project 3, which includes essential facilities for Long Thanh Airport operations, have reached approximately 86% of the construction volume as per the contract value. Out of 16 main bidding packages, 4 have been completed, and the remaining 12 are underway.
Most of the ongoing construction packages are expected to be completed by December 2026. However, some large-scale items requiring complex technical specifications, such as the internal traffic system, technical infrastructure, passenger terminal, cargo terminal 1, and parking facilities, are still being focused on for completion.
According to the plan, key projects will be completed and accepted by November 2026. Procedures related to environmental, aviation security, and personnel deployment for operations are expected to be completed by early December 2026.
Alongside construction, relevant units are conducting project acceptance, completing environmental documentation, approving aviation security programs, licensing personnel and vehicles for airfield operations, and carrying out procedures for obtaining airport operation certificates and other specialized procedures for flight operations.
The infrastructure components for the initial phase of operations include runways, taxiways, aircraft parking aprons; signal lights and aviation navigation equipment; passenger terminals, cargo terminals; fuel supply systems; rescue and firefighting facilities; aviation security systems, air traffic control towers, and other facilities ensuring flight operations.
