Vietnam has two ports ranked among the world’s 30 busiest container ports in the 2026 ranking published by maritime industry journal Lloyd’s List, based on container throughput in 2025.
Ho Chi Minh City Port ranked 22nd, handling more than 8.9 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), surpassing the Port of New York and New Jersey in the United States.
Meanwhile, Hai Phong Port ranked 26th, with throughput exceeding 8.3 million TEUs, slightly ahead of Germany’s Port of Hamburg.
Together, the two Vietnamese ports handled approximately 17.2 million TEUs in 2025, highlighting their importance to the country’s international trade and logistics network.
TEU is the standard unit used to measure container traffic in maritime transport. One TEU represents the capacity of a 20-foot container, while a 40-foot container counts as two TEUs. Throughput figures include both loaded and empty containers handled by the ports.
The ranking reflects the growing role of Vietnam’s port infrastructure in global shipping and supply chains. Ho Chi Minh City serves as a major gateway for trade in southern Vietnam, while Hai Phong is a key maritime hub for the country's northern region.
Their positions among the world’s leading container ports underscore the importance of port capacity, logistics connectivity and efficient cargo handling as Vietnam seeks to expand trade and strengthen its position in international supply chains.
